King Chav – Survival of the Art (Exclusive Q&A)

King Chav is a new artist repping Jacksonsville Florida. Starting music in middle school, it became his passion. After getting in the studio for the first time when he was 17, he knew its what he wanted to do. We got a chance to link with King and got to know him a little. Get to know more about him below

Where you from?
I born in Bridgeport, CT but I now reside and represent for Jacksonville, FL.

How did you get your start in music?
It started in middle school. We used to freestyle battle at the lunch tables. Then I moved to Jacksonville in high school and started rapping at my church. That was my first introduction to the whole process of being an artist: writing, recoding, performing, etc.

How long have you been making it?
My first time in the studio was when I was 17. Through college I decided I didn’t want to pursue music anymore and gave it up. But I was inspired to get back to it so since 2015, I’ve been steadily creating and releasing music.

Who are your influences?
Some people I look up to for musical inspiration are Kirk Franklin, Lecrae, Jay-Z, Tye Tribbett, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole.

What motivates you?
My motivation is always to inspire and motivate people. I truly believer God has given me a gift to express ideas and concepts through my music so I use it to honor Him and to help motivate people. Impact always moves me more than income. If you impact the lives you need to in the right way, the money will come.

What are you currently working on?
Currently in the studio working on my second project entitled The Golden Lining. It’ll be an 8 song project dropping early May. Also working on a joint mixtape with my bro Rab G, dropping late summer.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I see myself as a father, since I currently have no children.I see myself turning this love I have for music into a full time career. 5 years I fully expect to be touring the nation and impacting lives consistently.

What is your opinion on the current hiphop scene?
The internet and social media has made the music scene a completely different game. I think now is one of the best times in history to be a part of hip-hop. It’s now the most popular genre in the world for the 1st time in history. The ways for exposure and fans has never been more open for the indie artist. We can get into the whole real hip-hop vs new wave rap but I think both can exist and excel within the genre. It’s not perfect at all, especially content wise, but it’s good. I try to focus on the positives than can help propel, rather than complaining about the negatives.

Anything else you would like to say?
Make sure y’all connect with me on Twitter and Instagram @iamkingchav or my website kingchav.com. Stream/download my 1st project Time Will Tell to get you ready for The Golden Lining in May. Always strive to make everywhere you go or anyone you encounter better than when you got there. God bless and stay up!
