Explain who you are for those who don’t know

Melvin Thomas otherwise known as 3x, (also known as 3xclusives), twitter: @3xtadot (pronounced tae-dot) is a Music Producer and Audio Engineer.

How did you come up with your name?

My name originally was 3xclusives, we came up with the name at a house studio in Philadelphia around W Sylvania St. I would go there everyday after classes. I went to La Salle University at the time, they had a studio there but restricted me from using it because I wouldn’t share my music… 🤷🏽‍♂️. The artists at studio there would always say “call up Mel, he got that exclusive shit.” I walked in one day to about 6 different artists in the studio that day and I heard someone shout “you want some exclusives?” After I heard that we (DJ Statyc & Yola Mane) recorded that and it became my producer tag, you can hear it in some of my older records/beats. Recently, I just shortened it to 3x.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from the DMV, went to college in Philadelphia for a few years and now back in the DMV going to Howard University

Whats it like growing up where your from?

Honestly, I feel like the DMV is overlooked a lot in the music industry, a lot of young talented artists here. But with that being said it’s also pretty fuckin grimy here, one person always trying to get a “leg up” on another.

How did you get into music?

I first got into music production and dj-ing in high school, kinda kept it to myself tho until I got better, every producer goes through that phase. When I got to college, I started taking it more seriously, as soon as classes ended I would either use the studio at school or catch a cab to a house studio in W Sylvania St. Mexico by Malik Kalil was probably my first official record, which I ghostwritten (along with DJ Statyc), produced, and recorded. I made that and a few other records then transferred to Howard University on a scholarship to play soccer for the school, and also because I wanted an opportunity to branch out more.

What makes you different than other artists?

I’m just different, I make hits, you can hear it in my production for the most part, I try to start the wave more than ride it, I get tired of hearing the same old beats so I try to make my production stand out as much as possible.

What are you currently working on?

Honestly, right now I have a lot of shit that’s just hasn’t been released for the most part. I plan on releasing all, if not most, this summer. I have records made from like 2-3 years ago that are just tucked away so they have to be released soon. 💯

What are you working on?

There’s a lot of different projects that I’m working on besides that, too many to count. I have a record on king trip’s next album, and I’m working on an upcoming EP with Enzo, another artist out of the DMV.

“Faith” – Joe Bah (Prod. by Johan Lanista)

“Faith”, performed by Joe Bah, is his third solo release of 2017 and possibly his strongest. The track is carried by the beautiful Faith Evans sample through out and Joe Bah’s strong, aggressive (yet laid back) vocals seem to be the perfect complement. Be on the look out for more releases from Joe as the year goes on.

Indy Spotlight: Lee Sahir

Explain who you are for those who don’t know

I’m a rapper and producer from the DMV but I don’t really claim that DMV tag cause I’m so not like the frontline artists blowing up in the area right now.

How did you come up with your name?

Lee’s the first syllable of my government name so I just stuck with it. Sahir is in reference to Sahir Ludhianvi. That’s a poet and songwriter from India I’m a fan of and I fucks with Indian culture off music and their approach to spirituality so it just felt right when I created the persona. Lee Sahir sounds cool so fuck it.

Where are you from? What’s it like growing up there?

I was born in Frederick Maryland but moved to Hagerstown when I was 5 or 6 so I just say I’m from here. It sorta depend where you at in the city. Hagerstown got people who get a new whip for their birthday and they parents got boats and they a few blocks from gang members and drug dealers and shit they don’t know nothing about. I’ve lived in both areas cause we moved around the city growing up so my experience has been all over the spectrum. I hear shit all the time how we’re turning into the new Baltimore but I don’t know how I feel about that. We have some music talent in this city though and I’ve been focused on that more than I been really paying attention to the shit that’s happening societally.

How did you get into music?

When I turned six, my whole kindergarten class from Frederick came to Hagerstown and we put on a Peter Pan show in my house and I had such a fun time doing that, I did theater for the better part of the following 10 years. In high school, I went to arts school and they had music production equipment on the vocal floor but they didn’t have a class to actually learn how to use it for making beats, they just used it for some other shit like piano composition which was cool but it wasn’t what I wanted to do. At the same time, I stopped doing theatre because the theatre teacher at that school didn’t like me and didn’t cast me in anything. So I wasn’t going to lunch with my friends, I was locked in that room teaching myself how to use the equipment and I figured shit out over time. With rapping, me and my Kenny (Kennece The Menace) starting rapping not as anything serious, like we really didn’t see longevity in this shit when we started, but we just realized over time like “…shit, we kinda nice” and nobody we were rapping with was at the same level we were at lyrically and content wise. So my senior year, I got a used MacBook for Christmas and a old homie left his mic at my house and just never came back to get it so I used that for a while, set up a studio in my parents basement, started recording us and other local rappers and singers and once we peeped our competition we were like “alright, we gotta do this shit forreal cuz these guys are some some shit” and this was years ago.

How are you different than other artists?

What makes me different than artists locally and on a larger scale is the fact that I produce the vast majority of my songs, I record and do the engineering work for all of my songs, and what I rap about is different than what a lot of other rappers do. I’m versatile as fuck. I don’t know anybody who raps about living in the hood, then raps about a shordy he talking to, then raps about meditation and Buddhism and the importance of spiritual tranquility and is making their beats on top of writing complex songs.

What’s next for you?

I have a lot of ideas bouncing around my head right now, but it’ll be tight once the product hits the market. Videos and shows soon.

Anything else you would like to say?

Shoutout everybody in my area I fuck with that’s doing they shit. Kennace the Menace and Left Leg, Haydo and Malott, Skies, D$taxXx and Lil Dre, all them. Elgiiin, Swiiift, Ukno, and Kyng K. It’s too much unrecognized and unappreciated talent. @LeeSahir on everything, videos and shows coming soon.

Kyan Cortez Britton – Foundation + Exclusive Q&A

Kyan Cortez Britton is a new artist out of Cleveland who is trying to make a name for himself. Below is his 1st single “Foundation”

We recently chopped it up with Kyan and got to know more about the man behind the artist. If you like what you heard and would like to learn more about him, get to know him below in our exclusive Q&A.

Explain who you are for those who don’t know

How did you come up with your name? Before I came up with the name it was a struggle because I had to be catchy and creative since I was younger I was always bad now was always in a lot of trouble so that’s where the name hot boy came from and sunny just reflects of the Sun and also I’m light-skinned so it’s kind of a play on words

Where are you from?

I’m from Cleveland Ohio East Side Shaker Heights

Whats it like growing up where your from?

It was a struggle growing up where I am from even though it was the suburbs people think just because you live in a nice house your life is just golden everything isnt always what it seems to be a growing up in a household where with alcoholism, domestic violence, money problems, we always had something going on.

How did you get into music?

It all started just in the basement with the homies freestyling and just doing what we usually do. I started taking seriously about few months ago probably 6 months ago what inspired me was my best friend Damon, he committed suicide and it was just so much pain that I just had and I had to find a way to release that and that was two years ago.

What makes you different than other artists

I’m different from other artists because I actually tell my story I don’t try to add anything that I never been apart of I don’t try to put on a facade to sell my music I’m just me and I paint a picture if the struggle

What are you currently working on?

Who currently working on new music planning on putting out a mixtape pretty soon just got to wait patiently can’t put time on good music it just comes naturally and when it feels right I’ll drop my mixtape but for now I got songs for days.

Anything you would like to say?

This is my story I appreciate everybody checking me out and listening and just know that it doesn’t matter what situation you’re in now you can always make it better you just got to get up and grind everyday never be satisfied keep setting high goals and have high expectations.
