Get to know: FloKid

FloKid is a new artist from Miami with a lot to say. We chopped it up with him and got to know a little more about the man behind the music. Read more below:

Where you from?

I’m from North Miami Beach, FL

How did you get your start in music?

I started doing music after high school when I failed horribly to receive a college scholarship to play basketball.

How long have you been making it?

To be honest, I’ve been making music on and off for at least six years now. And consistently for the last two years.

Who are your influences?

My influences are the ones at an arms reach and certain idols. My sisters, My mother, Jcole, Nas.

What motivates you?

My mother over 50 years old still working two shifts motivates me to end that. The death of my older brother due to black on black violence motivates me to get up out my situation and apply a better life for my family. And my little brother who’s diagnosed with Autism.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on original music and hopefully a single will be chosen out of a few of those records. And I started a series called #PracticeOnWeekends where I drop a video exclusively on Instagram every Saturday. We’re trying different forms or branding and marketing to build positive attention and awareness.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This is definitely a question I ask myself often and it changes. In five years, I would love to be in a situation where my music is getting heard globally and I’ve established a pure platform. And pushing empowerment within different categories of life struggles.

What is your opinion on the current hiphop scene?

Currently hip hop is like a pot of gumbo, it’s a lot of stuff going on. You have publicity stunts, aggressive music, melody raps, positive conscience music, etc. The fashion of hip hop even has a different mixture. I like the stage it’s in because we have different options. I just wish certain type of artists had the equal opportunity as the other to be heard.

What made you do a song dedicated to domestic violence?

It’s a common social issue that gets swept under the rug. Recently I’ve been seeing domestic violence blowing up within celebrities. So I did this record to shed light on the situation, hoping it goes viral and people would understand the importance of protecting each other.

Did you witness it sometime in your life?

And yes I’ve witnessed it growing up. It affected me because I was helpless, I was young and didn’t have the correct mind stability to react.

What’s your words for someone who is going through it?

Please seek help immediately. Call the police or either get in contact with close friends or family. If you’re too scared or embarrassed, please contact the domestic violence hotline number 18007997233. I just wish everyone had the mental strength to leave and not give anyone else another chance to harm them again.

Anything else you would like to say?

Thank you guys, Hiphopsrevival, for the platform you guys are providing for artists like myself who want and need to be heard. For anyone reading this, continue to chase your dreams. Handle your problems knowing you’re going to overcome them. Stay blessed.

Get to know: CHYDE

We linked with Swedan artist Chyde and got to know more about the man behind the artist. Check it out below

Explain who you are for those who may not know

I go by the name of Chyde and if you don’t know me by now, you will.

Where you from?

I’m born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden.

How did you get your start in music?

I grew up with my father being a well-known and respected guitarist / leadsinger in a Rock N’ Roll band touring all over Sweden. So my childhood was seeing him performing. It wasn’t until I was 10 years old I started writing my own lyrics after my brother showed me a underground hiphop song and it just instantly clicked. Like a natural connection I couldn’t explain in words at that age. I just knew it was that it was rap I was going to be doing… So my father had this portable studio with like 8 channels on it, with inbuilt drums and then he added guitar as a melody and bass to that and I added my vocals to it. That was the beginning of Chyde.

How long have you been making it?

I’m 24 years old now so it’s been 14 years on and off but always with my mind thinking rhymes and having new ideas… the mind of a writer. It’s not until recent time that I decided I’m not gonna waste more time. I’m going all out now and in 3 months I just put together my first offical album called “Speaking My Silence” with 24 tracks.

Who are your influences?

Right now: J. Cole, Tupac, Drake and XXXTENTATION.

What motivates you?

Life. And death. Kind of paradoxic but let me explain… Life because it’s a blessing to be alive and experience whatever this is… and to be able to express ourselves and connect worldwide through passion, through what we create, through who we are… that is a beautiful thing. Death because it’s a reminder of how temporary this is. I think we’re all energy that never dies and that death is a human construct as we are eternal beings… but as of this physical life, it’s only now. And so, this is why death motivates me. Recently my elder brother died and he was always proud of me for embracing the music and using my passion instead of taking the paths of life that he did… so me doing this is for him too.

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on my second album already that I plan on releasing this summer. It will be a follow up on “Speaking My Silence” with the same vibe to it but just more enhanced and extended. Already got ideas down and started writing songs for it. Also, I’m collaborating a lot with different artists. Just expanding my name and for the creative outlet of being part of different songs and even genres of rap…

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself doing everything I do now but bigger. Wider. More. Better. I know I’ve got something… don’t know what it is… but just a natural “gift” to feel music on a deeper level and I find it easy to express myself through words… it would be a shame for me not to embrace that and use it to create and to empower the world with who I am and what I do.

What is your opinion on the current hiphop scene?

I think there’s a lot of dope artists who are the “top ones” right now who don’t use their position to actually speak their truth. It’s mostly just repetitive words, simple lyrics over monotone beats and I can’t really seperate artists if I just hear their songs. They all sound the same. That’s why I listen to the ones I mentioned, because they have personality. Character. And they actually put emphasis on the lyrics too and have a message in their music. Even though creation is free, I think we as artists, have a responsibility to what we create… and by that I mean a responsibility to ourselves to go “is this really what I wanna represent? Is this my truths? Is this what I wanna give this world?” and to connect with whats real to us and go from there. But there’s a few artists left who actually put their heart into music so there’s still hope for hiphop. And now I am here.

Anything else you would like to say?

Yeah, thank you for this opportunity Hiphops Revival.

And to those listening… if you like my music, feel free to contact me personally. I respond mostly through instagram DM: itschyde. And to everybody else… fuck yall if you don’t like it.

Peace
