I was born in Haiti and came to the U.S to have open heart surgery when I was 9 months and I’ve been here since.

How did you get your start in music?
I got started in music when I was little. I was in love with poetry and then when my cousin introduced to music it all made sense. Plus I wasn’t really a talkative person so music was the only way I could express myself.

My influences are T.I, Dwyane Wade and Daymond John.

What motivates you?
The beauty in the struggle and the light at the end of the tunnel.

What are you currently working on?
Right now I am working on my 2nd project called “Mademoiselle”. It’s a tape that I did that was based on pushing my boundaries and trying to do different kind of music and also something dedicated to the ladies.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
This is a very hard question for me to answer but I know in 5 years I am going to be wherever God wants me to be but definitely in a better position than I am currently at the moment. I know I would be the voice for the voiceless going through what I am going through being an immigrant and trying to get there life together.

What is your opinion on the current hiphop scene?
Its very different but you got to respect everyone’s art even if you can’t understand it.

Anything else you would like to say?
Check out my first project that I did called  “Full Court Press” and a couple of videos that I have out and be on the look out for my next project “Mademoiselle” that should be dropping early April.

Jewel talks The KickBack EP, favorite tracks, whats coming next, & more

Jewel has been working hard. Making moves, making songs, and loving the process, the new EP “The KickBack” is the definition of hustle. We got a chance to sit back and talk to Jewel about the project and whats to come. Read below:

Let’s talk about the project, what was the motivation behind?
Bett, my main motivation behind this project was me proving that I can do this. Really proving it more so to myself.

Where did the name come from?
I came up with the title The KickBack because I’m not really a club person. I like to hit bars but I love a kickback. I think they are intimate but still enough ppl to get a party going. Beer pong, tree, bottles and girls. Perfect lol

What is your favorite track from the EP?
I’d have to say Mariah, I really love that song. I love them all but Mariah states all facts and it was a fun song to come up with. Especially the hook, “catch me out PG with some pretty girls…” PG County is Pretty Girl County and that’s facts.

Do you consider this your best work?
It’s my best for now because i know there’s always room to get better. But i feel like this EP is a good vibe, i love it.

Do you feel good about the overall success of the project?
So far I’m feeling really good about it. The Kickback has been getting love and recognition so far but I know there’s much more to come. I’m excited about this one.

What’s next for you?
Next I’ma stay in the studio continue to cook up, I’m also gonna drop the music video to ‘All Good’

Can we expect a full LP soon?
I may drop some other singles and stuff then I’m definitely gonna drop an LP. I’m just tryna build my catalog at the moment.

The KickBack EP is available now via iTunes here

Rico Messiah talks new EP, working on his health, self producing, & more

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Rico Messiah but just because we haven’t heard from him, it doesn’t mean he’s not working. Rico has been focused for the past few months working on his new EP. With no features and mostly self produced, the project is destined to be dope AF! We got a chance to sit down and chop it up with Rico and talk more about the project. Check it out below:

How have things been with you?
I’ve been cool. Maintaining. Last year was trying to say the least. I learned so much about myself more than any other year on this earth.

What have you been working on?
I’ve been working on me. I’ve been working on getting everything I’ve ever wanted.  Working to be the best, not only artist, but person I can be. Working on everything attached to me. Working on my personal relationships. Working on my health. Most importantly I’ve been working on being transparent and building creatively as an artist. I’m trying to be omni-present, I want to be like Michael Jordan with this rap shit. Not only was he nice with the offense he had nine defensive first team awards. He had influence. He changed the game. Well that’s what I inspire to do with my music. Not only can I rap, I can write a song, a crazy hook, and I can produce it.

Your ep drops March 9th, what can we expect from it?
You can expect this project to give your insight into my thoughts over the last few months. It’s my own personal diary.  Also, you can expect some original organic sounds. I also will be dropping some freestyles that day.

Who are the producers on the project?
I produced most of the tracks on the EP. There is a bonus track on the EP with one of my favorite production teams. Like I said before it’s a very personal project. Didn’t know if I would even drop it.

What is your most meaningful song? And why?
I wouldn’t say one song is more meaningful than the other. Each song on the EP holds a special place in my heart. They are like children I don’t love one more than the other. They are all meaningful in their own way.

What kind of vibe does it give?
I wouldn’t say that it has a vibe. I would say that the EP has an influence. It has a lot of hidden truths inside of the lyrics. This is something that will make you think. Eclectic rap but relatable.

Do you think it’s your best work?
It will be my best work until I drop something else.

How long have you been working on it?
There is a remastered beat from three years back on the EP. But I would say 4 months for what all is dropping that day.

Any features?
Not on this project. There will be plenty on the following projects. Just a production feature.

Anything else you want to mention?
purchase merch and Listen. Thanks

Indy Spotlight: Allan Retro

Allan Retro is a talented artist who is trying to make a name for himself. Born in Kingston, raised in Brooklyn, Allan had no choice but to grind for what he wanted. It’s not easy coming up in the city wanting to get involved in music. As most people know, music isn’t something you can learn in school. You have to teach yourself. That’s exactly what Allan did. Starting music in High School, he studied many genres and learned to incorporate them into his own style. We got a chance to talk with Allan and got to know the man behind the music. Read more below

Where are you from?
I’m from Kingston, Jamaica, my dad is Jamaican and my mom is of jamaican/asian descent. I’ve been living in brooklyn practically my entire life now..

How did you get your start in music?
I got my start in music in high school with a couple friends, I actually started studying a lot of different genres of music to incorporate into my own style. Techno, electronica, jazz, r & b, hip hop, rap, rock, reaggae, they all stem from similiar roots. It’s an expansion of sounds that are out there to be discovered and to be inspired by. I feel you have to appreciate different genres to get an overall experience of great sounds. It’s help me build my own “sound” which I’m happy for, so innovation is key especially in such a vast music industry.

How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for about 13 years now. I’ve had a couple hiatus in my time because of life’s situations, but my mother is like my greatest fan. She is always the one to push me to go for the top when it comes to the talent she sees in me. I used to be unsure and reluctant in the past to pursue my lifelong passion because of fear, but I realized I have to be confident in my talents because no one else will do it for you at the end of the day….

Who are your influences?
Sade, ATB, Drake, Roy Woods, NAV, PARTYNEXTDOOR, 6BLACK, H.E.R., Roy Woods, OceanLab, Ayumu Hamasaki, Namie Amaro, Flatbush Zombies, ASAP MOB, Bodega Bamz, Joey Bad ass and lots others there’s so many for me damn lol….

What motivates you?
Motivation stems from everywhere to me, it could be from someone helping a person on the street to an artist’s new song. Motivation has no boundaries and I implement them in my music all the time.

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on making more content and to keep pushing my music in all avenues.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I hope to be in a state of mind where I can purely be happy for making a living out of something I love to do everyday of my life, that’s my driving force.

What is your opinion on the current hiphop scene?
The current hiphop scence is unique and fantastic I think. More and more independent artists are being discovered for their exponential talents with having home based equipment, it’s so self sufficient right now im this day in age of technology and social media. So much great music out there waiting to be discovered. I love it.
