Indy Spotlight: STARJAY

Explain who you are for those who don’t know
My name is starjay, I’m a rapper out of Brooklyn I’ve been at it for awhile, I’ve had meetings with people like dj enuff to execs from Atlantic and everybody loves the music but you have to put up numbers so that’s what I’m focused on until somebody takes a chance.

How did you come up with your name?
Well my given name is shajay and when I started rapping my friends started calling me starjay so I’ve been star since I was a kid. The block named me.

Where are you from?
I’m from coney island, last stop on the train.

Whats it like growing up where your from?
It was good and bad, bad cause it’s poverty out here. The average income per house hold is $9k and these are households with multiple people living off that amount so if you’re fortunate out here you’re lucky. But I had a good childhood, we had fun we was oblivious to all the dangerous shit going on around us that now shapes the kind of music I make. So it was like a gift and a curse growing up out here, this not a place you should raise you’re kids though or even want to hang at it’s just bad energy with a good day here and there. This place fucked alot of us up mentally and made a lot of us mentally strong, it’s home and always will be but I want something better for me and mine.

How did you get into music?
Well when I was younger my uncle always had all the music and would plaza it around the crib and you know I would freestyle off my head but it always made sense. When my uncle passed that was when I was like let me take this serious and started writing with a purpose. So to answer you’re question I always loved music but my uncle always playing it made me want to be involved and plus he used to sing so you know someway I feel this is him living through me.

What makes you different than other artists?
The content, it varies it’s not all party and turn up. I’m aware of our surroundings, how being a young black man is hard as shit. How coming from a single parent household gives you a whole other set of issues. How growing up fucked up made you want the fly shit you couldn’t get when was a kid. So I try to speak on everything I try not to let people box me in. Plus I’m super nice so even songs like triggaman where I’m speaking on the deaths of young black men as well as young black men killing young black men don’t come off as preachy it’s still some shit you can knock.

What are you currently working on?
Currently working on #ForeverYoung2 which I’m almost done with so September I’ll be dropping that.

Anything you would like to say?
Just want to say look out for my new music and if you haven’t heard of me come fuck with you’re boy you won’t be disappointed. Follow my soundcloud (www.soundcloud.com/Starjay31) for all new music and freestyles. I appreciate this and hopefully we can do this again when my new shit drop.

Indy Spotlight: Smurf The God

smurf-4

Explain who you are for those who may not know
I’m a humble person, I give respect when its due. I’m giving and caring but im also a demon. Ive been making music since I was 14, grew up in a single household with my mom. I come from section 8 with one brother. It made me the man I am today. I’m a hustler, a grinder. Music saved my life, if it wasn’t for music, I would be a loos screw out here. I would definitely be dead or in jail.

How did you come up with your name?
My name was given to me, cuz i was crippin hard at a young age. Smurfs are blue and i was a lil blue nigga. I added God later on when i started rapping because we are all gods. It sais that black men where gods. To me a god is someone that has mastered their ability. Showing they’re the best. When it comes to this rap shit i am a God.

Where are you from?
Saint Petersburg, Florida

Whats was it like growing up there?
Its really what you make it. Everyone is doing everything at young ages. Seem like everyone is grown at a young age. 11 years. Kids killin kids, kicking doors, same shit u see in every ghetto really. But it seem like saint pete really the bottom. I go other place but it dont be like saint pete. Saint pete is big but small at the same time. Everyone knows everyone, everyone is trying to come up. Everyone tryna finnesse its just a lil place full of finesses. its the bottom.

How did you get into music?
I got into music, after being abused by my moms boyfriend growing up. It was how i dealt with things. I didnt take it serious till i got older. I kept it to myself. When i got older i met my close friends Bang, Kel, Bam and Max. They was rappin so i started to freestyle on the beat aswell. We started linking up at the park free styling everyday. We was linking at the park beeffin wit niggas, playin ball and rapping. Niggas started telling me i could really rap so i started to do it for real. Seemed like my homie Kel was as good as I but it got to a point he couldnt keep up. So he went into boxing cuz we used to slap box alot. He was the man at that.

What makes you different than other artists?
Everyting i rap about are facts. I am versatile. I can do trap music, i can do conscious rap. I think i can do pop if i really wanted to. I can hop on any beat. Thing about me is you may see songs with me on tracks with Justin Beiber then I can switch it up and do a record with DMX. My abilities are limitless.

What are you working on?
I am currently working on my newest project Demon Child. I dropped The Last Laff as my first project which was an instant classic to me. However, I want to show more of my versitiliy on my newer projects. So Im dropping two projects, Demon Child as a rap project and “The Blueprint” shining light on my more Hip Hop catalog. My content is deep, I have alot to say.

Whats next from you?
Look out for Demon Child and The Blue Print. I will be dropping videos from The Last Laff until then. If you want to listen to someone with something to say, just play me. La Cosca Or Nothing NIGGA!!!!

Get to know: Johnny Do It

uncle

Explain who you are for those who don’t know
For those that don’t know I go by the name of Johnny Do It. I’m just a young artist on my grind trying to come up in the game.

How did you com up with your name?
Well originally my name was Lil J3. It was a basketball name at the time I just rolled with it as a rap name too, but I figured it’s too many “Lil” rappers in the game so I wanted something different. I got Johnny because that’s my name of course & then came up with “Do It” just randomly. At the time I think I was looking at a Nike shirt or something & they is slogan “Just Do It” so I just switched it to Johnny. It had a ring to it so I stuck with it ever since.

Where are you from?
I’m from Sacramento, California.

What was it like growing up there?
Growing up in Sac is pretty cool. You got your good & bad about it as you do in most cities. It can be a quiet & peaceful place & it can be a rowdy place where dudes get active. It just all depends on who you are & how you move. It’s one of the cities that get overlooked because of the Bay Area & the LA influence on the game. But it’s a city full of people with potential just waiting for they shot to make it out.

How did you get into music?
I been around music my whole life. No matter what the genre is. I like everything from Rock, Rap, R&B, Gospel, Oldies, i mean the list go on & on. Different people I’ve come across in life introduced me to different forms of music. I believe diversity is key. Don’t want to stick to just one type of music.

What makes you different than other artists?
What makes me different from other artists is that I’m true to myself. Alot of the artists is rapping about things they don’t do or have never done before in they life. I’m not out here trying to portray an image of something I’m not. Anything you hear from me on a record is all facts.

What are you working on?
Right now I’m just continuing recording new material spending time trying to perfect my craft, getting these visuals shot & things like that.

Anything else you would like to say?
I got alot of music out there & multiple projects that you haven’t heard so give yourself a chance to get familiar with me. Follow me on IG & Twitter, Check out my soundcloud, & subscribe to my channel on Youtube. I rocks with everybody that rocks with me. It’s always love

Indy Spotlight: Dizzy, Darling

screen-shot-2017-08-08-at-10-58-15-am

Explain who you are for those who don’t know
– I’m a Photographer and Musician, who loves to play in various creative mediums. But for the most part I just do stuff randomly and by accident, sometimes, it sounds hella weird and some people seem to like it.

How did you come up with your name?
– When I was 19 or 20 I wrote some short novels about a couple who slowly started to disconnect emotionally from each other. And that phrase stuck with me, because the girl in the story says that to him. That she’s feeling dizzy, unsure about love and everything. Plus, I love the word “Darling”, like people should really use it more to their beloved ones haha. My music sounds most of the time really unsure about love or even melodramatic I would say, so I thought it was a perfect match. And I like the idea of a “Project” that sounds more like a sentence than a real name.

Where are you from?
– I was raised in Switzerland, but for the most time I daydream about my second home, Brazil.

Whats it like growing up where your from?
– For the most part it is great to live in a secure environment like Switzerland is. But it comes with a lot of stress and pressure, especially when you try to be true to yourself and try to make a living with creative stuff. But thats everywhere in the world I guess.

How did you get into music?
– My parents played all kind of music in the household back in the days, so it automatically resonated with me. With the years I found more and more music that I didn’t really pay attention to as a child and this influenced me heavy. I just love to play around with different genres and influences. Just to put a really, lets say, mainstream melody with a strange industrial type thing together is really fun. Or sample Madonna and mix it with reversed Baile funk rhythms. This is pure bliss for me.

What makes you different than other artists?
– I think we all use the same color palettes, but the technique and the way I paint with melodies and cadence is far more experimental than my peers I think. I don’t think the people here in Switzerland are used to this kind of music but its fun to challenge others and myself and to explore raw emotions.

What are you currently working on?
– I just started some concepts for my next album. Just throwing random ideas and see which ones stay in my mind for a long time. And in the meantime I’m really stoked about some collaborations with other artists, which is new for me, because my music is so bedroom based. But I’m really looking forward to these projects, I’m receiving a lot of love and many suggestions for collabos. Oh, and more musicvideos of course.

Anything you would like to say?
-I’m just thankful for every opportunity. I love the fact that this art thing, after all these years it slowly begins to morph into something special. It’s not paying the rent and shit, but I get payed with a lot of love and recognition, and that’s all I’m hoping for.

Indy Spotlight: Shée Blue

Explain who you are for those who don’t know.
I’m Shée Blue. The Shée  is prounced Shay. I’m just an MC that you can’t put in a box. I don’t like to do labels.

How did you come up with your name?
When I first started doing music, my rap name was Shée Gutta, because I always keep it ‘Gutta’. But as years went down the line I decided to change & shorten it to, Shée Blue, which is my nickname and government.

Where are you from?
Rochester, NY.

Whats it like growing up where your from?
It’s very hard. Everybody’s trying to make it but others don’t want people to make it. But, I still love my city. It made me, me.

How did you get into music?
I always loved music. I listened to all genres growing up. I got into the flute when I was younger and one time I was with my cousin who was into rap and we started freestyling and from that moment on I knew it was on. From then on, I loved it ever since.

What makes you different than other artists?
I’m my own individual. I like to express myself and things I’ve experienced differently. Not just because it’s hot right now, not taking anything away from them, but I just want to always have a message or point in my music while being me.

What are you currently working on?
As of right now, getting ready to drop my mixtape The Check In and my debut album, Delayed Arrival.

Anything you would like to say?
I just want to thank anybody who supports me and I will continue to drop dope material. And  yeah, big shoutout to my team HCM! We got next & now!
