Explain who you are for those who may not know
My name is Sasha Ricardo WIlber but I go by the name of Smasha, Im from London, England. Music has surrounded me my entire life ever since i was born you might say its destiny, my Dad’s Father was a singer back in his day and my Moms Mom was in the choir, my mom was a an amateur singer but damn could she sing she gave up after trying many times in taking it far while her brother (my Uncle) Benjy is a dancer, singer and songwriter so you can see music has always been in me for a very long time.
When did you start rapping?
I started rapping in the school yard at the age of 15 just freestyling and battling my friends and whoever would want me to at this point i really didnt take it seriously and mom wasnt too fond of me concentrating on music. at 16 i decided to make my mom happy and get a job as a chef but i was doing music on the side. by the time i reached 17/18 i decided that i want to make music my number 1 goal in life cuz i just loved creating music. So i wrote my very first track called “All I Really Want Is You” with the help of my uncle Benjy and him singing on the chorus this was like my breakthrough in music, I shot a music video with my long time friend Joe Taylor (who still does my videos) but later took down because i realised i could do better (now i wish i didnt). That same year i joined a music group called MTAC (More Than A Crew) I was only in it for a year then we all went our seperate way. 8 months later i wrote another song with my uncle helping and performing it this song was Called “Here We Go Again” it was real summer time banger and a 90s type hip hop feel we shot a video for it too. I took a year off releasing any music to work on my debut mixtape titled “Redefined” i recorded and wrote a total of 36 tracks in this time i decided to release “Nothin ‘Gainst Ratchets” as just a single with the help of Joe Taylor we shot the music video.
On August 8th 2016 I released my first ever Mixtape “Redefined” it was released first on datpiff and on the 20th of August I released it on Streaming platforms e.g. Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Deezer etc it has been getting great feedback. I released 2 videos from the Mixtape “Tombstones ft Dark Child & Shinobi” and “Ride”.
Whats next from you?
I am planning to release more singles and in July 2017 i will be release an ep and i will be goin on tour for a month to the States.
My major influenes have to be Wu Tang, The Game, Donell Jones, TLC, Drake and Kendrick Lamar they have all different ways of expressing themselves which i love whether political and social they have all hit a high influence in my music
